What Is Homeowners Insurance and Do I Really Need It?

Homeowners insurance is like insurance for just about any other type of property.  It is designed to provide homeowners with financial protection against all types of natural disasters.  The basic homeowners policy today can actually protect both the home and the objects and things that are kept inside the home.  There are certain cities in the United States where homeowners insurance has proven to be more valuable.  Most of these cities are prone to suffering from various types of natural disasters.  Although cities like Seattle don't really have the same problems with natural disasters that cities like L.A. and New Orleans might have, there are still many benefits to having homeowners insurance.

As far as insurance policies go, homeowners insurance is often referred to as a package insurance policy.  What this means is that homeowners insurance is actually able to cover both damage that is done to a person's home as well as damages or injuries that may take place in the home or that may have been caused by member's of the covered family.  In most cities, including Seattle, this protection is also extended to a person's pets.

Although most homeowners insurance policies will cover the damages that are caused by natural disasters, there are some exceptions to certain policies.  In some cases, homeowners are required to purchase separate policies in order to have their home covered for certain disasters.  For example, a separate policy is needed in order for an individual to have earthquake coverage.  The same is true of flood insurance.

In terms of having homeowners insurance, Seattle and cities across the country do not actually require homeowners to carry homeowners insurance.  However, if the home has been acquired through the help of some type of lending organization, it is more than likely that the lender will require that the borrower carry some degree of homeowners insurance in order to protect their investment.  Individuals who live in areas that are prone to suffering from certain natural disasters may be required to carry specific types of insurances.  Insurance is also required in most cases that involve condominiums and co-ops.

The bottom line is that no matter where a person lives, there may come a time when homeowners insurance will be able to help cover the costs of an accident or disaster that may take place.  In these cases, some individuals have had to learn the hard way about the importance of homeowners insurance.  In most cases that involve insurance, it is often better to be safe than sorry.
